Euthanasia

We’d all rather not think about it, but there comes a time as our pets age when we start wondering if their quality of life and comfort has been declining over time. They bring so much joy and love into our lives that it can be hard to have to weigh the option of euthanasia. It’s a tough but in certain cases very necessary conversation, and its one that our staff here at Windsor Park Veterinary Clinic can help you with.

Understanding When Its Time to Say Goodbye

It can be difficult to know when euthanasia should be an option for your pet. They can have good and bad days. Their mood, disposition and comfort can fluctuate. If you’re unsure of whether or not your pet is suffering, we can evaluate them and give you the information you need to make a decision. But what are potential signs of declining quality of life in a cat or dog?

  • Your pet is a chronic pain patient, and their symptoms can no longer be alleviated by medication or alternate therapies
  • Your pet will not eat, or will only eat when force-fed
  • Your pet’s activity levels have dropped significantly, and they can no longer move comfortably, or are no longer interested in their favorite activities
  • Your pet cannot walk on their own or with the support of a wheelchair
  • Your pet is incontinent to a severe degree and frequently soils themselves
  • Your pet constantly has difficulty breathing or coughs severely

If you consult with us or decide independently that euthanasia may be humane decision to make, let us know.  We can schedule a quality of life exam, or if you feel certain, a euthanasia appointment. If you have questions about the process, reach out to us in whatever way is most comfortable to you, and we can walk you through every step.

We understand this isn’t a choice to be made lightly, and we want everything to be at your pace. It’s not easy, but your pet will cross the rainbow bridge without pain or worry and with the comfort of being by your side.

If you’re having difficulty making this decision or struggling to know whether your pet is experiencing discomfort, please contact us via phone, text, or email. We will respond to you as soon as possible, and respect your deep love and compassion for your pet. We can’t make this decision for you, but we are here to help.
